As the first of the German economics universities, the Cologne Business School (CBS) offers the English-language Master of Arts degree course in Sustainable Tourism Management. In four semesters, the students are occupied intensely with shaping future-orientated tourism – therefore qualifying themselves for an international growing work market.

This Master of Arts programme concentrates on the three pillars of sustainability: environmentally friendly, economically successful and justified as well as ethically founded tourism is researched and made accessible in theory as well as in practical application examples.

„Travel awareness is becoming increasingly important for many holidaymakers. A growing customer base with increasing purchasing power no longer simply looks for and books the cheapest package holidays or hotels which serve food familiar at home. Instead, attention is paid to the fair treatment of staff and that regional cuisine is served. The customers attach importance to the countryside and that further resources of the country they visit are not influenced by tourism and that their own CO2 footprint remains marginal“, as the Dean of the Tourism Management Department at the CBS, Prof. Dr. Guido Sommer, explains.

Both small and medium-sized companies and the large tourism operations react to this shift in demand and to increasing regulatory activity from politics. „In view of the change, experts are needed who are familiar with sustainability and who are open for the challenges coupled with the implementation of sustainable tourism principles. Our cooperation with touristic organisations and companies shows that this is a future-orientated work market“ according to Prof. Dr. Dirk Reiser, Professor for Sustainable Tourism Management at the CBS.

„The topic of sustainability still remains atypical for a Business School: however we recognise that companies in this area are in need of expertise and create jobs“, as Prof. Sommer confirms. „The compatibility of the economy and social aspects and action which can also be justified ecologically in the long-term is already gaining in its significance – and this is true without any exceptions for the tourism sector too. We wish to do justice to this with our Master of Arts programme.“

The study course is only taught in English and includes one other foreign language. Therefore, the graduates are excellently equipped for the global employment market. The English-language Master of Arts degree course is also ideal for international students who aspire to or wish to develop a career in tourism.
