Stiebel-Getriebebau develops special pump drive for "Taxibot"

Environment saving, noise reducing and powerful these are the special characteristics of the Taxibots being successfully tested on Frankfurt Airport. The new tow vehicles pull airplanes, such as Boeing 737 weighing up to 60t, from gate to runway. For future use, the Taxibot is designed for even larger airplanes e.g. Boeing 757, weight up to 120to. The new tow vehicles are steered from the airplane cockpit, jet engines can remain switched off till arriving runway. This new development saves per take-off approx. 700kg kerosene. With its 950bhp hybrid engines (consisting of two diesel engines and two electricity generators) the TaxiBot reaches a maximum towing speed of 42km/h.

Stiebel pump drives operates highly efficient
Located at the heart of the Taxibot, the drive works with its robust high precision technology. A further aspect to be considered is the total weight of the Taxibot, to which Stiebel made an essential contribution by designing a special light weight aluminum housing out of one piece. „We constantly invest in state-of-the-art technology which we combine with our technical expertise and practical know-how. This allows us to realize such highly special projects for our customers in an efficient and straight-forward way, like the Taxibot project,“ explains Schumacher.

Optimized heat transfer and service
Proven in tests, the Stiebel TLD 4588 pump drive with two outputs enables the Taxibot diesel engine to deliver its utmost performance (700kW) in order to move the airplanes. Enhanced heat transfer results from the extremely light aluminum housing, its large surface as well as extensive ventilation openings in the SAE housing. A service access to the Stiebel pump drive has been designed for optimal and time efficient access, for frequent and, in particular non-complex technical service checks. For application in other vehicles the Stiebel pump drives can be customized in many ways, e.g. adjusted ratios or a special lubrication system with a horizontal immersion pipe in the oil sump.
