Digitalization as a challenge and a chance

Smart meter technologies provide energy utilities with new means for optimized consumption transparency and a deepened customer dialogue

Cologne, 04.10.2017 – Digitalization has an impact on all aspects of life. The analogous measurement technologies are gradually abolished and replaced by smart meter-technologies. This changeover is a major challenge for all energy utilities, but it also offers new opportunities. Smart meter specialist GreenPocket provides utilities with innovative means to give their customers a transparent view on their energy consumption and to improve their customer dialogue.

The digitalization of the energy industry and the interrelated smart meter-rollout are occasionally viewed as a legally enforced burden by energy utilities. It is less well-known that the changeover to smart energy also provides high potential for improvement: Analogous measurement technologies are solely able to measure the energy consumption of a residential or a business-customer on an annual basis, whereas smart meters generate one data point every 15 minutes. This leads to over 35.000 data points in a year, resulting in a far more precise customer knowledge.

GreenPocket: flexible and demand-orientated
Smart meter-specialist GreenPocket is a reliable partner for energy utility companies, aiming to support their sales activities with optimized data transparency and energy efficiency. By processing individual data sets, its intelligent energy management software is able to give a clear view on the end-users energy consumption. Furthermore, alerting- and reporting-functions can be offered to business-customers. This way, they are able to highlight patterns of their energy consumption and to optimize the energy efficiency for their customers, developing a constant dialogue and a long lasting customer relationship.
One of the tool’s most important features is its flexibility. GreenPocket provides the appropriate software packages for every customer need. Based on the customers‘ feedback, the software is continuously developed further, reflecting the constant changes on the energy market.

Upselling tool and improved data quality management for business customers
With the latest update of the GreenPocket energy management tool for business customers, two significant software features were integrated. Using the new upselling tool, energy utilities can now decide which software bundles and conditions will be offered to each individual customer. This enables an easy differentiation between an economic basic package on the one hand and a more extensive premium package with optional features like alarm and notification functionalities on the other hand. These packages can then be bundled into different pricing models by the energy utilities.
Another improvement of the web portal for business customers comprises an enhanced data quality control. With the help of bar and line charts, energy providers can now easily detect if and when gaps arise in their automatic data import. This allows an optimized monitoring of data quality.

Campaigning tool and gamification for the residential customer portal
The web portal for residential customers has also been substantially updated with two valuable functions for energy utility companies. The campaigning tool now enables a precise modulation of marketing instruments based on individual customer behaviour, such as promotions via push notifications and email-alerts (e.g. giving hints on „happy hours“ when energy prices are low). It is now possible to individually select and address customer profiles with certain consumption patterns and offer fitting tariffs and bundles to each customer.
In addition to this, the new gamification app encourages consumers to lay daily bets on the height of their energy consumption, increasing the software’s usage frequency and customer involvement: In a test run of 3 months, about half of the customers made use of the gamification app, 25% of them even played on a daily basis. This way, energy utilities can significantly increase customer awareness and retention.

Digitalization: Mike Flache among the world’s TOP-10 influencers

The Onalytica ranking of the 100 most influential individuals and brands on Twitter on the topic of digital transformation has listed business angel and startup investor Mike Flache among the top ten.

Stuttgart, 27 September 2016

The latest Onalytica ranking officially confirmed that digital transformation is one of the great global challenges for businesses and will demand the increased attention of companies now and in the years ahead. Discussions and exchanges on this issue no longer follow the traditional patterns but take place where the transformation originates from: virtual space. Mike Flache is quite pleased with his ranking: „To be able to make a sustainable contribution and to help shape one of the most important issues for the future of the global economy is acknowledgment and motivation enough.“

The methodology for this analysis conducted by Onalytica is based on engagement data. For this ranking they analyzed over 338,000 tweets over 90 days mentioning „Digital Transformation“. Onalytica’s analysts looked at a user’s connections and calculated relative influence using PageRank analysis. This methodology enabled them to show those users with the best quality of connections who are driving the most engagement on topic. Reach (follower count), Relevance (number of tweets on topic) and Reference (number of times the user has been added to twitter lists) were also factored into the equation to produce an overall influencer score. Onalytica also used their custom-developed Influencer Relationship Management Software (IRM) to generate the network maps and topic share of voice charts. The result is a data-based list with 100 individuals and brands, each a distinct leader in the exchange and discussion on Twitter about digitalization.

Digital transformation will become the key strategic thrust for most CEOs

The term „digital transformation“ describes the restructuring of a company’s culture, business models and associated processes with the objective of fully taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the new digital technologies. According to a recently published report by the World Economic Forum, companies that utilize digital technologies across all business areas are more successful in opening up new sources of income and in prevailing against the competition of „digital natives“ and rival companies. By 2018, it is expected that 67%* of CEOs of the Forbes Global 2000 companies will have shifted the focus of their business strategies onto digital transformation.

Decision-makers must understand digitalization as a holistic effort

Mike Flache is a business angel and investor who supports innovative technology startups and emphasizes the importance of an integrated approach for this complex task in paving the way to the future. „No doubt, the transition from analog to digital could be a long march, because it’s more than just a technology issue; it’s also about a clear strategy aligned closely to market needs, streamlined processes, and, above all, open-minded and competent people“, Mike Flache explains. „Companies that are willing to understand that these key factors need to be in line for a successful business transformation, will enjoy fundamental advantages over competitors – from creating new business models and profit streams to building a decision-oriented agile organization.“

The ranking lists Mike Flache alongside with Satya Nadella (CEO, Microsoft), Brian Solis (Chief Analyst, Altimeter Group), Bill Bunting (Director Healthcare Solutions, EMC), Vala Afshar (Chief Digital Evangelist, Salesforce), Ronald van Loon (Director, Advertisement), Kirk Borne (Principal Data Scientist, Booz Allen Hamilton), Simon Porter (Vice President Commercial Sales Europe, IBM) and Paul Daugherty (CTO, Accenture), among others.

A summary overview of the ranking is available at onalytica.com (http://www.onalytica.com/blog/posts/digital-transformation-top-100-influencers-and-brands/).

Bitkom raises growth forecast for German IT market

German IT market is further on the rise and one of the most exciting markets in Europe. Foreign companies specialized in IT security and on IoT platforms can profit from this positive trend when they enter the market now.

Bitkom raises growth forecast for German IT market

Villingen-Schwenningen (D), November 4th 2015 – The German ICT market is further on the rise – especially in the segment software. In its recently published economic forecast German high-tech association Bitkom even declared the rise of its growth forecast by 0.4 percent to 1.9 percent. That means a turnover of 156 billion Euros for the whole market in 2015.

Between the various sectors of the branch though, there are significant differences. Sales with end-user devises such as smartphones (+5.5 percent) and with software (+5.4 percent) are on top of the scale while sales with telecommunication services (-0.3 percent) and consumer electronics (-3.8 percent) are declining.

Most important growth driver of the industry remains the field of information technology, which builds from software, hardware and IT services. According to the Bitkom forecast, sales here will reach 80.4 billion Euros in 2015. That“s a plus of 3.5 percent. From an already high level, the sector software is growing the most with a plus of 5.4 percent to 20.1 billion Euros. The business with IT services has also grown steadily within the past years and is now about to reach a turnover of 37.3 billion Euros, which relates to an increase of 3 percent.

Also, Bitkom declared that for the first time ever, the German ICT branch is employing more than one million people. That means, that in the past five years about 135.000 new jobs have been created. Again, the companies belonging to the sector information technology employ the most people (794.000) and grow the strongest.

„The providers are profiting from the fact that companies of all branches are adjusting their business towards digitalization because of the general trend of the digital transformation of the economy“, says Dr. Bernhard Rohleder, managing director at Bitkom. „We see a closer networking in industrial production and a downright digital boom in the automotive sector. Industry 4.0 and intelligent mobility stimulate the demand for semiconductors.“ Besides the growing demand for servers, the strong sales increase of semiconductors leads to a general increase of sales in IT hardware to 23 billion Euros.

„Already today cars are high-performance computers. They will be networked data centers in the future. The market figures reflect this trend“, Rohleder continues.

Bernd Hoeck, managing director of the go-to-market think-tank bloodsugarmagic, agrees with Rohleder and declares: „Germany is one of the most exciting markets in Europe. All essential standards and concepts for industry 4.0 and the smart factory will need to be established here because most of the leading providers of the mechanical engineering sector are situated in Germany. The Internet of things remains one of the most important technology and market trends here.“

Especially for providers of IT security solutions or IoT platforms this is a great chance and an entry into the German ICT market really a must. bloodsugarmagic has a long standing expertise and experience in go-to-market strategies and knows how to successfully gain a foothold in the German market.
