Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Cohda Wireless, the leading supplier in the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and connected autonomous vehicle (CAV), today announced their collaboration in the fields of automotive vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. By bringing together Renesas“ V2X R-Car system-on-chips (SoCs) and Cohda Wireless“ V2X and CAV software solutions, the companies deliver a V2X reference solution that supports European and North American communications standards for V2X system development.

Cohda Wireless will demonstrate the jointly-developed V2X reference solution consisting of Renesas“ R-Car W2R and R-Car W2H SoCs combined as a starter kit and Cohda Wireless“ software at the ITS World Congress 2016 taking place October 10 -14 in Melbourne/Australia (Booth 313).

In response to the industry expectations for U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to mandate V2X to improve road safety and efficiency in addition to the recent deployment of V2X technology in Japan, targets have been set to widely introduce secure V2X technology in multiple global regions. With over a decade of R&D on IEEE 802.11p protocol, WLAN-based technology has proven to offer reliable and secure communication for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). Critical and time-sensitive information on all road users and roadway elements, such as traffic control devices, are expected to be shared among for improved safety and efficiency. According to USDOT estimates, V2X technology can minimize over 80 percent of non-impaired crash types.

Renesas has established an ecosystem with Cohda Wireless to offer a reference solution that will contribute to the acceleration of V2X system development. The new V2X reference solution complies with European and North America standards from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and IEEE.

Renesas“ V2X starter kit

The Renesas V2X starter kit for the V2X reference solution comprises the R-Car W2R, a 5.9 GHz band automotive wireless communication WAVE SoC, and the V2X host processor R-Car W2H SoC with an embedded hardware security module (HSM), which encrypts the communication/messages and protects against cyber-attacks. The R-Car-based starter kit conforms to the IEEE 802.11p communication standard for ITS used in Europe and North America and to all other applicable standards including that for security requirements. The starter kit also meets or exceeds the SAE minimum performance requirements established for the USDOT-funded connected vehicle pilots, which is widely expected to be the precursor to wider deployment of V2X-enabled infrastructure. The R-Car W2R delivers industry-leading performance when using Renesas‘ exclusive radio frequency (RF) system design technology, e.g., suppressing out-of-band transmission signal noise below the -65 dBm stipulated by ETSI. The R-Car W2H V2X Host processor SoC can integrate Japanese, US, and European security methods, communications protocols, and applications. The V2X starter kit is designed and tested to comply with automotive environmental, quality and reliability requirements and is refined for best performance using Renesas“ experience and expertise developed over many years as a leading automotive advanced semiconductor supplier.

Cohda“s software solution

Cohda Wireless“ software solution consists of network-, facilities-, applications-, management-, and security layers for both IEEE1609 and ETSI ITS-TC stack.

System manufacturers can now select an attractive Renesas – Cohda Wireless V2X reference solution and take advantage of the high maturity level of the hardware and software. Both were deeply validated and proven for reliable operation.

Availability
The Renesas-Cohda Wireless V2X reference solution is scheduled to be available in April 2017.

Telstra and Cohda Wireless successfully trial V2I technology over 4G

Telstra, in partnership with Cohda Wireless, has successfully trialled Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technology over Telstra’s 4G network in South Australia, a pivotal first step in developing Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology. Examples of V2X include vehicles talking to infrastructure (such as traffic lights), vehicles talking to other vehicles, and vehicles talking to vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. The use and development of V2X communications will enable the creation of intelligent transport systems that may allow more efficient use of road infrastructure, better traffic management (reduced congestion) and, in the future, coordinated and safe autonomous vehicle operation. Most importantly, it will likely lead to increased safety for road users as the impact of human error can be minimised as vehicles will be able to communicate and react to their surroundings.

Telstra believes its 4G and future 5G networks can play a vital role in supporting the faster rollout of intelligent transport systems and V2X applications, making implementation of the technology cheaper and more efficient. Telstra“s Director of Technology Andrew Scott said that the successful V2I trial marked the first phase of Telstra“s plan to show how V2X technology can be supported via Telstra“s 4G network. „While there has been a lot of focus around future transport technology, there has not been much work done to date in Australia on supporting intelligent transport systems via existing 4G mobile networks,“ Andrew said.

„The trial we just completed in South Australia confirms that 4G can support V2I applications. These applications included alerting a driver to roadworks ahead, giving green light priority to high priority vehicles, and testing optimal green light timing where the vehicle is informed of the optimal speed to approach a traffic light so that that they get a green light when they arrive, therefore allowing a more continuous flow of traffic.

„However this is only the first phase of our project with additional trial phases lined up for testing Vehicle-to- Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Vulnerable (bicycles and pedestrians). We are particularly excited about the upcoming Vehicle-to-Vulnerable testing as we will be able to showcase the Australian-first sending of standardised intelligent transport systems messages over the 4G network to enable interaction of vehicles with smartphone-equipped bicycles.“

Telstra and Cohda Wireless intend to trial Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Vulnerable technologies in South Australia within the coming months.

Cohda sets off to Storm the world in 80 days

The MK5 has unmatched radio performance in harsh outdoor, mobile environments.

Two student-built electric motorbikes undertaking an 80-day around-the-world odyssey are equipped with world-leading vehicle communication technology from Australian company Cohda Wireless.

On Sunday, August 14, STORM Eindhoven, a team of 23 students from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, set off with these electric motorbikes on a round-the-world journey.

Aiming to cover 26,000 kilometres in 80 days, the motorbikes contain Cohda MK5 On-Board Units which enable V2X (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure) communications. As well as monitoring motorbike performance during the journey, Cohda plans to demonstrate how V2X systems can improve vehicle safety and traffic efficiency in cities with V2X infrastructure installed.

Cohda Wireless Vice President of Business Development Bernd Luebben said the company was proud to sponsor this trailblazing event. „We are supplying Cohda MK5 On Board Units for the motorcycles and support vehicles,“ he said.

„Cohda“s MK5 On-Board Units allow real-time communication to ensure the motorbikes perform according to design and meet this demanding schedule. We also plan to support V2X demonstrations in cities such as Shanghai where we have V2X units installed.“

The STORM World Tour began in the southern Netherlands city of Eindhoven last Sunday, starting a route that circumnavigates the northern hemisphere, leaving Europe via Central Asia and then crossing North America before returning to Eindhoven on November 2.
Each electric motorbike has a top speed of 160 km/h and can travel 380 kilometres before requiring a recharge. The student-designed batteries – 24 separate cartridges that can store as much as 28.5 kWh energy – can be replaced by a fully charged battery pack within seven minutes.

Each day, the students will re-charge batteries from the local power grid at companies, universities or homes en route. The team will also take part in events that show the potential of electric mobility.

Jaguar Land Rover“s multi-million pound Autonomous all-terrain driving research project envisages a self-driving car that can navigate both on-road and off-road as well as in difficult weather conditions.

The project has used Cohda Wireless MK5 On-Board Units and software stacks and applications to deploy its V2X (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure) systems. In a world-first off-road demonstration, Jaguar Land Rover connected two Range Rover Sports together using Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) technology from Cohda Wireless to create an Off-Road Connected Convoy. The company has published this video on Youtube to show these off-road connected convoy research vehicles communicating with each other using Cohda MK5 units.

The Cohda-enabled wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communications system instantly shares information such as vehicle location, wheel-slip, changes to suspension height and wheel articulation, as well as All-Terrain Progress Control and Terrain Response settings between the two vehicles.

Cohda Wireless CEO Paul Gray said the Jaguar Land Rover demonstration showed the wide range of benefits of connected vehicle technology. „Cohda has a suite of V2X products focused on the platooning of autonomous vehicles,“ he said.

Siemens and Cohda Wireless collaborate on C-ITS infrastructure

Siemens AG (XETRA: SIE) and Cohda Wireless today announced they will collaborate in the area of Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I).

V2I devices are part of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), which share information between vehicles and roadside infrastructure such as traffic lights. This increases the quality and reliability of information available to drivers about their immediate environment, other vehicles and road users.

Siemens expects to globally deploy transport infrastructure such as overhead sign gantries and traffic lights in its V2I roadside units (RSUs). RSUs are 802.11p WLAN-based radio modules that reliably and securely transmit information such as speed limits, warnings of icy roads or other dangerous situations, traffic jams and construction warnings within a fraction of a second to passing vehicles and traffic control centers. The successful adoption of vehicle to infrastructure technologies is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, reduce vehicle accidents and lower auto-related pollution.

Under an agreement signed by the companies, Cohda Wireless will develop and produce RSUs for Siemens, enabling this „smart infrastructure“ to communicate with connected vehicles. It will also see Siemens base its Sitraffic ESCoS RSU upon Cohda“s market-leading MK5 V2X family, using NXP’s Roadlink chip sets.

Siemens is a world-leading provider of mobility solutions and Cohda Wireless is the market leader in V2I technology. Siemens will deploy Cohda’s technology for various ITS field tests and pilot projects, including the A58 motorway in the Netherlands, A9 motorway in Germany, and the Living Lab in Austria.

Cohda Wireless CEO Dr. Paul Gray said Cohda’s agreement with Siemens created greater certainty for organisations planning to adopt connected vehicle technology. „Cohda is very pleased to be supplying Siemens with our V2X products. The collaboration of two leaders in their respective markets is good news,“ he said.

Siemens‘ Sitraffic platform is the world’s most comprehensive road traffic management platform. The Siemens Sitraffic ESCoS RSU will be able to communicate important information to and from cars and larger vehicles equipped with V2X technology.

Cohda Wireless provides hardware and software development services and products for the roadside units, based on Siemens‘ long-standing ITS knowhow and development specifications. Cohda also ensures maximum communication reliability and quality, even in challenging reception conditions such as between tall buildings.

Cohda products have undergone about one million vehicle-days of testing in these trials.
